How to prevent bed sores at home

Pressure ulcer also known as pressure sores or bed sores results in damage of your skin due to continuous and extended pressure. Pressure ulcers are categorized into 4 levels, dependent on the  intensity of the ulcer. Stage 4 ulcers are acute or critical ulcers whereas Stage 1 ulcers are less intense.  If you are bed-ridden or if you are a wheel-chair user, chances of developing bed sores is high. Individuals who have poor nutrition or poor circulation can also develop pressure ulcers.

The key to prevent bed sores is to move as frequently as possible, this helps patients with bed sores to relieve pressure to a greater extent. It would help to increase blood flow to your body and hence, you could do away with pressure sores. If you are bed-ridden, make sure to move intermittently atleast once in every 2 hours. You may also get support from staff to assist you in changing the position. Make sure that your headrest and foot section of the bed is in level. For people who are bed-ridden it is a good practice to tilt your body to the side and back your body with cushions. You may also place a cushion between your knees and ankles to reduce the pressure.

Wheel-chair users need to follow good sitting posture – you need to sit straight in the chair. You also need to lean forward when you are seated if you have pressure ulcer. Ensure that your knees are always in level with your hips. Make sure that you don’t lean to one side for extended period as it could result in pressure sores in your buttocks or elbows. Exercise could help you to stay fit and it is considered as the best solution for treating pressure sores. Wheel-chair users may also lie down to rest during day time.

Foot care – You need to wash your foots daily using mild soap preferably in Luke-warm water. Wear cotton or wool socks which helps to absorb sweat.

Take care after your skin

Make sure that your skin is clean and dry every time. If clothes are damp, it need to be changed. Moisturizers can help to keep the skin in right form and prevent the skin from cracking. It is also advisable to bath in warm water by using a mild cleanser to ensure moisture in skin.

Follow balanced diet

Following balanced diet will help in healing the wounds. Try to consume food which are rich in iron and protein, say lean meats and egg. Fish oils can also help to foster your body’s overall health. Consuming foods which are rich in Vitamin C and Vitamin E would help to heal the wounds which are created as a result of pressure sores. Maintaining proper weight is also crucial for individuals suffering from pressure sores. If you are either overweight or underweight, then chances for pressure sores can shoot up. Maintaining proper blood sugar levels also assists in faster healing process.

Smoking

Smoking can prove to be detrimental to individuals suffering from pressure sores. Smoking harms blood vessels and reduces oxygen content in the blood. Bidding adieu to smoking habit can help you to reduce pressure sores to a greater extent.
